Two stacks of old paperwork representing fragmented digital evidence

Investigation Challenges

How can policing rapidly extract digital evidence from mobile devices? In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, law enforcement agencies face increasing pressure to effectively investigate crimes, particularly in high-stakes cases involving rape and serious sexual offences (RASSO). One of the key challenges identified by our government client was existing inefficiency in handling and analysing digital evidence from mobile devices —especially when relying on traditional methods such as PDF extractions.

Elastic Data Integration

The NIAXO team looked to streamline the client’s digital forensics process, enabling crime analysts and front-line officers to harness data more effectively. By integrating a leading digital forensic tool’s extraction capabilities with the Elastic platform, NIAXO’s solution accelerated the client’s investigation progress whilst offering greater depth of insight. Instead of RASSO data being siloed in static, cumbersome PDF files, requiring manual intervention relevant information could now be selectively extracted and visualised using Kibana dashboards.

Mobile Device Analytics and Insights

By focusing on the extraction of only pertinent data, investigators will gain the flexibility to perform granular searches and redactions—critical functions for disclosing information in court. Crucially, the ability to filter out non-relevant data not only accelerates evidence handling but also reduces unnecessary exposure, building trust with victims and facilitating a more sensitive approach to complex cases. Officers were empowered to search, filter and spot critical patterns instantly, supporting a more agile, targeted and economically viable response.

Digital Evidence Ontology

Recognising that many police departments use more than one tool, NIAXO ensured compatibility through alignment with the Unified Cyber Ontology (UCO) standard. This compatibility meant departments across regions can share extracted data for real-time analysis, broadening the scope of investigations and making collaboration more feasible. The result is a more cohesive system that unites diverse forensic technologies under a single, powerful analytical Elastic framework, fully exploiting digital evidence from mobile devices.

Optimised Workflow

Optimising digital forensics workflows through the Elastic Platform will enable a raise in prosecution rates and improve outcomes for survivors while simplifying the investigative process for officers. NIAXO’s emphasis on efficient data extraction, advanced analytics, and interoperability aligns with our mission to provide an innovative approach and make data-driven technology accessible to the public sector and beyond
